We had a lot of rain in August and now into September this Labor Day it in the low 90ºF in northern Westchester. This has been great for mushrooms this season. I was on the hunt for black trumpet mushrooms and didn’t find any on this trip. I came across a lot of different mushrooms on my hike. I’m still working on trying to visually identify the mushrooms. I did come across a choice edible mushroom, chicken of the woods.
Chicken of the woods; this the first sample I have found in the wild that I have harvested. It is on the older end and I’m going to dry it out and make it into a powder to make soups and adding mushroom flavor to other dishes.
I will be making a mushroom catalog of all the mushrooms I find and that I positively identified.
